Much Ado About Credit

Poll fever has set in. And how! With Gujarat set for assembly elections in December, the battle cries have been sounded.

And the first blow has been struck by the Congress. Early this month, the UPA government issued an ad in leading newspapers of Gujarat highlighting the Central assistance to the state under the 20-point programme.

The Gujarat government has objected to “factual errors” in the ad and claimed that a large part of the financial assistance had been provided by the state government. From the tone and tenor of the strongly worded letter, it looks like chief minister Narendra Modi will brook no attempts to steal his thunder.

The Congress has now swung into Gujarat promising low-cost housing to the poor. Now all eyes are on Modi to see what he comes up with in response. Going by the BJP’s aggression in Parliament, it appears that 2014 is not all that far away!

Strictly Business
Qantas Airways has reported its first loss — about $256 million — since listing on the Australian stock exchange in 1995. The airline also cancelled orders for as many as 35 Boeing Dreamliner jets worth $8.5 billion.
