The government-promoted app, Aarogya Setu has garnered 150 million downloads milestone. The Covid-19 contact tracing app has reached such huge userbase within four months of its commencement.  Released on April 1, the app had 50 million downloads within 13 days of its launch. However, it just took 40 days for the app to cross the 100 million downloads.

Recently, on July 14, the app had around 127.6 million downloads and within a month the app reached around 150 million mark. While the app in its earlier days had garnered several privacy issues, despite the hurdles and through government support, it has reached this milestone. It has been reported that Aarogya Setu app also became the most-downloaded app in the world recently.

While Covid-19 contact tracing apps have flooded the global market, last month Turkey's Pandemic Isolation Tracking Project had witnessed 11 million downloads. Further,  Germany's Corona-Warn-App had also registered 11 million downloads recently.

An international daily-news platform recently highlighted that while governments are creating contact tracing apps to deteriorate the effect of the Covid-19 virus, these apps have the potential to utilise the personal data which includes movements, activities and relationships.

The top five list of government-backed Covid-19 apps includes Japan's COCOA and Indonesia's PeduliLindungi.

Initially, to increase the awareness about the Aarogya Setu app, the government had asked all government officials in several departments and ministries and private companies to download the app. Recently, Ministry of Electronics and Information (MeitY) had also made a version of Aarogya Setu app for Jio feature phones to increase its awareness.
