Xi Jinping secured an unprecedented third term as the Chinese president today, His success came after nearly 3,000 members of the Chinese parliament, and the National People’s Congress (NPC) voted unanimously.

According to reports no other candidates contested against Jinping and it was widely forecasted that Xi will continue to be in power for life and will be the next ‘President of China’.

The winning decision came in after nearly an hour of voting and electronic counting in around 15 minutes.

The president is going to play a dual role carrying the ceremonial role of the country’s head and the chairman of China’s Central Military Commission.

His role as the president a third time in a row and the other appointment of state leaders by the parliament come months after the Chinese government lifted Covid-19 policies.

Reports claim Jinping was already elected as the General Secretary of the CPC last year, in October 2022.

Meanwhile, the annual NPC session this year is also being regarded as significant due to the once-in-a-decade leadership change of the Chinese government including the Premier who presides over the State Council, the central Cabinet.

Further, the Chinese Parliament also elected Zhao Leji as the new parliament chair and Han Zheng as the new vice president, both from the previous team of party leaders at the Politburo Standing Committee.

And in the coming days, officials approved by Xi including premier-in-waiting Li Qiang, are set to be appointed to the top positions in the cabinet.

The election collides with the Chinese economy and the various challenges caused due to three years of Covid curbs. And the latter worsen the relationship with the West, especially the US.
