The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) has increased from 46.8 per cent in 2017-18 to 52.6 per cent in 2020-21, reflecting higher engagement of people in productive activities, said Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Singh said, WPR has shown a continuous upward trend in the last four years, while the unemployment rate has witnessed a continuous declining trend from 2017-18 onward.

Singh said that employment generation coupled with improving employability is the priority of the government and has taken various steps to deal with the problem of unemployment in recent times.

The estimated unemployment rate in the urban areas dropped to 6.7 per cent in the financial year (FY) 2020-21, as per the Annual Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) report.

The male unemployment rate in urban areas dipped from 6.4 to 6.1 per cent while the female unemployment rate fell from 8.9 per cent to 8.6 per cent in FY20-21.
