Veteran Lawyer And Former Law Minister Dies At 97

The veteran lawyer also served as the union lay minister in the cabinet of Morarji Desai from 1977 to 1979

An eminent lawyer and Former Union Law Minister Shanti Bhushan died in New Delhi at 97 on Tuesday. He was the same lawyer who represented politician Raj Narain in the historic case against then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi’s election in 1975. 

One of the close sources told a media company that he was not well for some time and died at his home in Delhi.  

In the historic Raj Narain vs Indira Nehru Gandhi case, the Allahabad High Court in June 1975 disqualified Gandhi for a period of six years from contesting elections.

The veteran lawyer also served as the union lay minister in the cabinet of Morarji Desai from 1977 to 1979. 

Bhusan left the two sons, Prashant and Jayant Bhushan who are also leading lawyers and legal intellectuals in the country. Shanti Bhushan has a successful political career as well, he has been in Congress and Janta Party. He has also served as a Rajya Sabha member too.

He was vocal about various issues like corruption and was one of the founding members of the Aam Admi Party but later resigned. 

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Law Minister, Kiren Rijiju and many other political leaders and lawyers wrote a condolence note on Twitter and other social media platforms to pay tribute to the veteran lawyer and former union law minister.
