Coastal shipping will be promoted as the energy efficient and lower cost mode of transport

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for the fiscal year 2023-24 on Wednesday amidst many challenges that the economy faces. The government's finances are tight, with debt rising due to the various social welfare schemes during the pandemic. The headline inflation has fallen below the Reserve Bank of India's threshold limit in the last two months. Core inflation, however, remains sticky. While economists expect the government to stay on the course of fiscal consolidation, the government might be tempted to adopt a populist route.
2023 will see state elections in as many as nine states, the results of which will be seen as a precursor of what the country's political landscape might look like post the 2024 General Elections.
