The concept of a teacher with a piece of chalk and a board to instruct on, with various formulas and lessons is what comes to mind when one thinks of a classroom. This same concept of rote learning and cramming the lessons taught by a teacher has been the age old solution to getting promoted to the next grade.
That has been the conventional method of teaching for one and all but at least now, one can say that some alternative teaching methods are coming in to the system and our education system is experiencing something new.
With certain unconventional or alternative teaching methods that teachers and schools have started practicing that not only enhance learning for the child in the classroom but further integrates the concepts of the lessons being taught, easily and simply for a better understanding.
According to a report by CompTIA, 78 per cent teachers and administrators teaching K12 believe that using unconventional teaching methods in the classroom has improved overall results.
Using methods like integrated teaching where in the children are taught around a similar topic in all subjects, improves learning and understanding.
Another great way of enhancing knowledge is by showing videos or movies related to the particular subject being taught in the classroom. Making use of visual learning tools advances further understanding for the child, which is why various schools now are making use of a smart board in the classroom, especially for primary level students.
Technology driven tools are a big thing now, with the use of social networking sites for the purpose of education or using skype to video call certain professors or experts related to the topic being conveyed in the class.
Anjali Aggarwal, Principal, St Marks Sr Sec Public School, Meera Bagh added, “Regular teaching methods need to be supplemented with fun and innovative teaching methods.”
New unconventional and alternative methods are continuously being used in classrooms across the world and it has now become necessary to understand these methods and execute them in the right manner for the benefit of the children’s educational growth.
