The United States delegation’s visit to Taiwan honours America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant democracy, said US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday

Amid the constant threat from China, Pelosi in a statement said, "Our discussions with Taiwan leadership reaffirm our support for our partner and promote our shared interests, including advancing a free & open Indo-Pacific region."

She said that America’s solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy.

"Our visit is one of several Congressional delegations to Taiwan – and it in no way contradicts long-standing United States policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, U.S.-China Joint Communiques and the Six Assurances."

The United States continues to oppose unilateral efforts to change the status quo, she added.

Speaker Pelosi and members of a Congressional delegation arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday.  This visit is the first official visit to Taiwan by a Speaker of the United States House of Representatives in 25 years.

Expectedly, China's foreign ministry condemned Pelosi's visit and said it seriously damages peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

The US should abandon any attempt to play the Taiwan card and faithfully abide by the one-China principle. If the US insists on its way, all the serious consequences will be the US' responsibility, the ministry said.

China and US through different channels have maintained close communication. We've repeatedly expressed our strong opposition to the potential visit of Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan & that it's a sensitive issue & how dangerous it could be, it added.
