US-based satellite provider, Hughes Network System notifies Jupiter 3, a massive geostationary communications satellite built by Maxar Technologies, according to a media report on Friday.

Amidst the industry focusing on increasing the packing capability into small satellites, Jupiter 3 is a reminder of large spacecraft and remains important for certain applications.

The size of Jupiter 3 is about the size of a standard school bus with its antennas and solar panels stowed.

The satellite roughly weighs nine metric tons and is designed to offer 500 gigabit-per-second Ka-band capacity for North and South America.

Commenting on the satellite, Adrian Morris, Hughes Network Systems, executive vice president of engineering said, “We are able to pull all of that capacity down in that specified region”.

He emphasised the satellite’s potential to suit the growing market in a certain region.

According to reports the launch was estimated earlier in 2021, Covid caused the delay, and after almost two years the satellite is manufactured completely.

Mark Wymer, Hughes Network Systems senior vice president said, this new satellite and the capacity that it brings for quite some time made us wait prolonged.
