US Treasury Secretary Janet’s Ukraine Visit Marks US Economic Support

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen notified her first visit to Ukraine has marked Washington's commitment to continue economic support for the country.

Yellen’s remark came on Monday, following her talks with Ukrainian Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal. She confirmed nearly USD 50 billion of security, economic and humanitarian assistance has been provided to Ukraine and further announced another multibillion-dollar package to boost the country's economy.

Commenting on the financial aid, Shmyhal expressed gratitude and thanked United Nations for its support and tagged Yellen as a "friend of Ukraine."

US support has helped Ukraine’s budget deficit to stand at USD 38 billion and underlined that the American country will provide another USD 10 billion in assistance by September, he added.

The US official also visited a renovated school where a Russian missile landed nearby in March and blew its window and announced an additional transfer of USD 1.2 billion, the first tranche of the USD 10 billion assistance package.

Addressing the school's students and teachers, Yeller said, “you are helping to write history in a country that is a central force in the creation of a free world.”

Meanwhile, Shmyhal and Yellen also discussed sanctions aimed at weakening Russia's economy and reports further claim, the possibility of using Russian frozen assets to help in Ukraine's economic recovery.
