India’s dream of becoming a semiconductor nation is likely to boost, as the United States is all set to seal a partnership with the country making the semiconductor supply chain more resilient and diversified.
The partnership was hinted at by US Secretary of Commerce Gina M Raimondo, who is currently on a four-day visit to India, she confirmed, an MoU on semiconductors would be signed between the two countries.
For now, no details regarding the MoU are released but considering the US a hub for leading fabs and fabless companies, in the long run, may benefit some companies to share production-grade technology with India.
Meanwhile, a bilateral collaboration for the development of a semiconductor design, manufacturing, and fabrication ecosystem in India is enhanced by the nation in coordination with the US.
A task force is also formed between the US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) and IESA with the Indian government’s participation in assessing near-term industry opportunities and facilitating the longer-term strategic development of complementary semiconductor ecosystems.
This task force will help the Department of Commerce and the ISM with opportunities. It will further be responsible for overcoming challenges and strengthening India’s role within the global semiconductor value chain providing inputs to the US-India Commercial Dialogue.
This collaboration along with the to-be-signed MoU can prove a win-win for reasons of India’s talent pooling for a domain struggling to find employees globally, especially for the companies like TSMC or Samsung opening in the US.
According to experts, India’s training programs for fab engineers should be considered as an opportunity rather than a challenge.
