Amid the recent controversy on mass layoffs, the microblogging site Twitter owned by Elon Musk will delete the crores of inactive user accounts.

Musk took to Twitter and wrote, “Twitter will soon start freeing the namespace of 1.5 billion accounts. These are obvious account deletions with no tweets & no log-in for years.’’

Earlier in the day, the Twitter CEO said that in a few weeks, tweets will show view count just like videos do.

“Twitter is much more alive than people think," Musk said.

In another tweet, he added, "Twitter is working on a software update that will show your true account status, so you know clearly if you've been shadowbanned, the reason why and how to appeal."

Musk also came up with a new update to the micro-blogging platform after the second instalment of the "Twitter Files" revealed how the company build blacklists and actively limited the visibility of certain accounts.

Since Musk has taken up ownership of Twitter, he has been trying to escalate free speech.

He said that “hate speech impressions" are actually down by a third since he bought the company.
