The Steely Resolve

The second issue had Tisco as the cover story. The lead picture had J.R.D Tata sitting with Russi Modi and a young Ratan Tata. Even in the picture, you could make out the tension between Modi and Ratan Tata from their body
language. Neither men were smiling, and even JRD looked a bit tense.

"Any citizen of this country must be an optimist to retain his mental equilibrium. If you don't maintain an optimistic outlook there would be no future... very often one cannot but take a bleak look at what is happening, whether it is in the political field... industrial (or) in the ordinary social field... If only the citizens were given the opportunities and the chance to develop our many skills, and the minimum requirements of a happy life..." — J.R.D. Tata

Second Issue Of BW 13-26 April, 1981

Tisco stands out amongst the tatty crowd of core sector white elephants... India's premier steel company is not only the last bastion of enlightened capita-lism against creeping statism but also a live testimonial to the much derided concept of trusteeship..."
