The Education Mission

Shiv Nadar Foundation, which has a corpus of about one billion dollars, said it aims to open 25 schools across India by 2020. The first schools will come up in Noida and Gurgaon in 2012.

This move will make the foundation, which already has its presence in higher education via Shiv Nadar University in Uttar Pradesh and SSN Institute in Chennai, foray into Kindergarten to secondary (K12) education

"There is a shortage of good schools that parents are looking for their kids," said Shiv Nadar, founder of HCL Technologies. The idea to have quality schools was conceived two years ago, he adds.

These schools would be different from boarding schools such as VidyaGyan, a rural initiative being run by the foundation in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshehar and Sitapur regions to cater to meritorious students.

However, these K12 schools will also be a non profit initiative. Nadar, whose net worth is estimated to be around Rs 15,000 crore, has committed about 10 percent of his total wealth towards philanthropy.

Nadar did not disclose the investment details that would go into the venture and said the rest of the 23 states were yet to be identified.

"The Shiv Nadar schools will focus on 'education for life' with emphasis on critical thinking, character building and all round excellence," said Shikhar Malhotra, Chief Executive Officer, Shiv Nadar School.
