The Big C And How To Avoid It

It is amazing how many people ask me about cancer. So, who can get cancer? Anyone. That’s because every person has cancer cells that don’t show up in tests until they have multiplied to a few billion.

Cancer is actually many diseases in one. When the body’s ability to fight disease goes down, cancer cells are given a happy environment in the body to multiply. When the person’s immune system is strong, cancer cells are destroyed or prevented from multiplying. Avoiding cancer means two things: creating an unfriendly environment for growth and making the immune system so strong via food and lifestyle that it can fight disease.  So what do cancers cells feed on?

Sugar. It is a cancer feeder. White flour, sugar, corn, cold drinks, rice, milk — all contain sugars that fuel cancer cell growth. As far back as 1982, cancer research proved that sugar was a big culprit. “Cancer cells demonstrate a 3- to 5-fold increase in glucose uptake compared to healthy cells,” said G.E. Demetrakopoulos, who worked extensively on cancer. Further studies have proved the link as well. A study of 60,000 people in Singapore, published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, found that those who drank two or more soft drinks a week had an 87 per cent higher risk of being among those who got pancreatic cancer. Note: Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc., are made with aspartame and it is harmful. Increasing fibre intake to flush out sugar deposits in the blood and body starves any cancerous growth in your body.

Milk. It causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. Milk also has sugar in the form of lactose. By cutting off milk, cancer cells will starve. The One Million Women Study in the UK singled out milk as a major cause of breast cancer.

Acidic environment. A meat-based diet is as acidic as a cooked vegetarian diet with lentils, extra-cooked vegetables and fried food. Replacing cooked food with raw food and fresh vegetable juices makes the environment alkaline, and reduces cancer cell growth. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to enhance growth of healthy cells. Including anti-cancer foods like broccoli, green tea, pomegranate, garlic, cabbage, tomatoes, apples, papaya, all berries further reduces risk.

Lack of oxygen. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily (40-45 min) and deep breathing (read: pranayama) help get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

Finally, cancer is a disease of the mind, body and spirit. Anger and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit and relax and enjoy life.

I do most of the to-dos in terms of eating healthy and exercising, but my blood pressure remains high and I get aches and pains. Could it be my sleep?
— Arvinder Tejpal, 39
Dear Arvinder,
You’re bang on. Lack of sleep raises blood pressure, makes us hungrier and puts our heart at risk. I have covered this as a special chapter in my book Restore as well because working professionals are always compromising on sleep. Your aches and pains, as well as blood pressure, are linked to fatigue and lack of rest. Get eight hours every day. Remember: if you compromise on your sleep due to your work, and if you collapse, your organisation will replace you. So, look after yourself first so that you’re not jobless later.
The author is a certified nutritional therapist and WHO certified in nutrition. She is the writer of Restore, a book on how to fight diseases for working professionals
