Telenor India, the pre-paid GSM services operator which operates on 2G has announced a new scheme for its subscribers through which they can stream unlimited videos on YouTube and Dailymotion between 11pm and 7am for Rs 2 a day. Telenor India on Thursday, November 26 announced this unique music and video streaming service. The company is also offering unlimited music streaming from Hungama Music and Eros Now music starting at Rs 41 with a validity of 28 days.

Telenor India Chief Product Officer Amaresh Kumar said the subscribers will be able to stream the videos from YouTube and Dailymotion at the speed of at least 150 kbps. “At night, voice traffic is low and we will be able to provide speeds between 150 kbps and 200 kbps,” said Kumar. “We are also using various compression and caching technologies to improve the experience. Users can save videos for offline viewing or can even download them at night to view them the next day without any buffering,”

Under the scheme, subscribers can select the video packs starting from Rs 2 to Rs 28 with validity ranging from one day to 28 days. Subscribers can use the new service pack to temporarily cache their favourite online video overnight (11 PM to 7 AM) and enjoy the buffer-free experience during periods of low or no connectivity. To prevent any bill shock if the caching continues after 7 AM, the customers will be charged at 2p/20 KB with a cap of Rs 5 for that day.

Kumar said 22 per cent of Telenor’s subscribers were currently using the data services on their mobile devices and Telenor India expects this number to grow to over 50 per cent by 2017.

Telenor India is commercially available in the six circles of UP (West), UP (East), Bihar (including Jharkhand), Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. It will soon start commercial operations in Assam.

Last year Telenor brought a paradigm shift in the market with service packs for WhatsApp and Facebook. These packs offered flat rates to access two most popular social and messaging applications on the Internet and took away the worry of volume consumption on data.

The new brand identity of Telenor in India promises more value to its customers on every transaction. While being the most affordable telecom operator in the market, Telenor India has consistently innovating to make its products simpler, easy to use and fair for all customers. Recently, it came up with the industry first initiative of providing free life insurance to all its subscribers in order to ensure more value for money to its customers. Telenor is also the only operator in the country today to voluntarily compensate for any call drop on its network.
