Tea Production In India Witnesses 3.7% Dip In June 2023

India's tea production during the month of June 2023 registered a decline of approximately 3.7% compared to the same period last year.

According to provisional data, tea estates across the country produced 137.85 million kilograms of tea, showing a decrease from the 143.12 million kilograms produced in June 2022.

The data also sheds light on the regional distribution of tea production within India. North India, being a significant tea-producing region, contributed 109.70 million kilograms of tea in June 2023, while South India produced 28.15 million kilograms during the same period.

Among the states in North India, Assam, known for its robust tea industry, recorded a production of 63.51 million kilograms in June 2023. However, this figure represents a noticeable decline when compared to the 75.16 million kilograms produced in the corresponding month of 2022.

West Bengal, another major tea producer in the North Indian region, performed relatively better, producing 42.64 million kilograms in June 2023. This is a slight increase from the 40.42 million kilograms produced in June 2022.

The decline in overall tea production during June 2023 has raised concerns among industry experts and stakeholders. While factors contributing to this drop are yet to be fully ascertained, potential causes such as adverse weather conditions, labor shortages, and economic challenges may have played a role.
