Sri Lanka's acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be the country's next president until 2024, a parliament vote count showed on Wednesday.

The newly appointed President says that the country is stuck in a difficult situation and they have huge challenges ahead.

He has replaced Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the bankrupt wracked country and resigned last week.

As per the official result, the present president polled 134 votes in the elections against his main opponent, Dullas Alahapperuma, who bagged 82 votes, followed by Anura Dissanayake with just three votes.

Speaking in parliament, he invited Alahapperuma to work together with him to end the crisis plaguing the country.

He said that the oath would be administered within the heavily guarded parliament building later on Wednesday.

Immediately after the declaration of the results, protests and Sloganeering has begun outside the Presidential Secretariat.

Several people have been ordered not to gather around the S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike statue in Colombo pursuant to a court order issued by the Colombo Fort Magistrate
