On Wednesday, Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill ended his affiliation with the party, alleging that sycophancy had eaten into the organisation like "termites".

Shergill resigned from the position of national spokesperson in a letter to Sonia Gandhi, and explained that the Congress' current ideology and the vision of the current decision makers are incompatible with young people's aspirations.

He wrote that decision-making is no longer driven by the public's interests or that of the country but instead by the selfish interests of individuals who sycophantically ignore real-world needs. The moral conscience forbids him to accept or continue working with the party.

Shergill mentioned that in spite of this, he shall always be thankful to the party for all of the opportunities he has been given in the past.

In response to a question about whether he resigned from the party posts or from its primary membership, he replied both.

Explaining the reasons for resigning, he said that the party does not take decisions in the public interest and is dominated by those indulging in sycophancy and ignoring actual reality.

He said there are many capable people, dedicated to serving the people, whose voices go unheard.

He added that coterie and sycophancy are devouring the Indian National Congress like termites,

His ties with Congress have been severed, he said.
