During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Samarkand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and discussed issues related to global food security and bilateral relationships.

According to the PMO, Modi and Raisi discussed many important issues pertaining to the bilateral relationship and expressed their desire for strengthening the relationship further.

"The Prime Minister highlighted that India- Iran bilateral ties are marked by historic and civilizational connections, including strong people-to-people contacts," it said.

The two leaders also discussed international and regional developments including Afghanistan.

Modi reiterated India’s priorities of providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan and the need for a representative and inclusive political dispensation in support of a peaceful, stable and secure Afghanistan.

Amid the Ukraine crisis, PM Modi also met Russia's Putin and reiterated his call for an early cessation of hostilities and the need for dialogue and diplomacy.

Putin and Modi discussed a range of issues related to bilateral cooperation, global food security, energy security and availability of fertilisers in the context of the challenges emanating from the current geopolitical situation.

During their meeting, PM Modi and Uzbek President Mirziyoyev touched upon priority areas of bilateral cooperation, particularly trade, economic cooperation and connectivity.

Both global leaders stressed the need to make concerted efforts to diversify the trade basket and enter into long-term arrangements to promote trade and investment.

"Connectivity was considered key to unlocking the potential in this regard, including greater usage of the Chabahar port and the international north-south transport Corridor," as per the official statement.

Regional issues, including Afghanistan, were discussed. The leaders were unanimous in their view that the territory of Afghanistan should not be used for terrorist activities.

Meanwhile, India will host the next SCO summit as a chairman of the organisation in 2023.
