The Supreme Court of India, on 20 March, directed the Centre to furnish its response to the writ petition preferred by the Telangana Government praying for directions to the Governon of the state Tamilisai Soundararajan to give assent to ten bills passed by the legislative assembly of the state.

Bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala listed the case for next week.

The bench refrained from issuance of formal notice to the Governor's office, as the office of the Governor is a high constitutional office.

The Telangana Government stated in its plea that the Governor was delaying the clearing of many important bills and this was stalling the legislative process.

The Constitution permits only three ways a Governor can deal with a bill which comes before him for clearance. To clear it, to send it for reconsideration or to refer it for the consideration of the President. Sitting on the bills indefinitely is impermissible in law, the petition claimed.
