Ahmed Devarkoil, Minister of Ports, Government of Kerala said the state has already spent Rs 100 crore towards the rehabilitation initiatives in connection with the under construction Vizhinjam sea port project.

The region has seen several development and welfare initiatives being implemented using the government fund and through the CSR fund of the construction company, he told the state Assembly.

Devarkoil said the Union Environment Ministry, at the time of signing the contract, had directed to carry out rehabilitation initiatives to the tune of Rs 8.65 crore in the region. “The LDF government had adopted a positive policy towards the fishermen community and spent Rs 100 crore for rehabilitation alone," he added.

According to the Minister, Land of local fishermen had not been acquired in connection with the sea port project. “The land of those who lived away from the seashore had been taken for the same,” the Minister clarified.

Compensations were given to all those who had lost land for the project and those who lost houses were given five cents of land each, the Minister reiterated.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the over 130-day-long protest against the under construction Vizhinjam sea port was temporarily called off by the fisherfolk after discussions were held with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The USD 900 million Vizhinjam seaport project is being built by Adani Group’s arm Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd that runs a USD 23 billion ports and logistics business. Once operational, Vizhinjam seaport is potentially well-positioned to win business from ports in Sri Lanka, Singapore and Dubai.
