Revolt At COAI

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) is facing a revolt. A majority of its members accuse Bharti Airtel and Essar Vodafone, which have major voting rights, of hijacking the apex body. An open defiance of COAI's views by its members was witnessed at a recent Open House session convened by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Tata Teleservices, Reliance Communications, Etisalat DB Telecom, Datacom and Unitech Wireless demanded a revamp of COAI and even threatened to launch a new association. The present system involves votes based on average revenue, while the members want a consensus system based on numerical strength.
