The Rajya Sabha, the Parliament's Upper House, passed the Women's Reservation Bill on Thursday, with all 215 members voting in favour.

Women's reservation bill, a landmark bill reserving one-third of Lok Sabha and state assembly seats for women, was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, with Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal saying it is part of a series of measures the government has taken to empower women.

Meghwal recounted the initiatives initiated by the Narendra Modi government for women's empowerment during the last nine years in introducing the 128th Constitution Amendment Bill, which was adopted by a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

According to Meghwal, the 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assembly will be both horizontal and vertical, encompassing the SC-ST category as well.
