In a major political drama in Punjab, former finance minister and Congress leader Manpreet Singh Badal joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), hours after quitting Congress on Wednesday.

Badal joined the party at Delhi Headquarters in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and various other BJP party members.

In his resignation letter to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Badal said that he has devoted every ounce of energy to every office he has held, both in the party and the government, but he is now disillusioned. "I was 'disillusioned' by the Congress," Badal said.

He further thanked Congress for providing him the opportunities, kindness and courtesy in the past times. The letter which he posted on Twitter read that given the prevailing culture within the party and the defiant desire in the present course, regretfully, he no longer wishes to be a part of the Indian National Congress.

The letter further mentioned his expectations of being integrated into the organisation with a rich history to work for the people of Punjab to the best of his ability, with this hope, seven years ago, he merged the People's Party of Punjab with Congress.

His initial enthusiasm gave him disappointing disillusionment, Badal said.
