Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said that the cabinet has approved the old pension scheme. The OPS was discontinued in the country on 01 April 2004.

"OPS has been approved by the cabinet. Details will be given. Many employees will be benefited from the old pension scheme. A notification has been issued," said Punjab CM.

An official spokesperson later said that in order to ensure that the scheme is financially sustainable for the exchequer in the future, the state government will be contributing proactively towards the creation of a pension corpus which will service the pension in future to the beneficiaries of the company.

Despite the fact that the AAP had already declared the plan to return to OPS, the delay in sending out the notification has pitted the government against its workers.

Two days prior, the Punjab-based Contributory Pension Fund Employees' Union (CPFEU) had made the announcement that it will host a Poll Khol rally to protest the Gujarati government in the lead-up to elections.

The notice is also an effort to calm down the CPFEU and is anticipated later in the evening.
