Textiles minister Piyush Goyal has initiated a move to shift the handloom weavers and handicraft artisans to the Government eMarketplace (GeM) portal. Additionally, he has urged all the government departments to shift to handloom products for their textile needs.

Quoting Goyal from his address on 8th National Handloom Day, the Textile Ministry said, “Stating that the e-commerce initiatives should be utilised to the fullest, he said the emphasis should be on onboarding of Handloom Weavers and Handicraft artisans on GeM portal in large numbers, while simultaneously making it incumbent upon all government departments to purchase Handloom Products for all their textile needs.”

Goyal emphasised on the urgent need of bringing together the weavers and artisans and the domestic and global clientele, to bolster not only the Indian economy but the empowerment journey of these artisans. He also proposed to get together the census data of over 35 lakh handloom workers and to put it up out in the public domain.

“He asked for organising a large scale exhibition involving all awardees of handlooms and handicraft since the inception of the awards to celebrate their achievement, and inspire others to emulate them,” the ministry said.

Goyal also focussed on the need for quality, consistency, and for selective use of technology to keep intact the real identity and essence of the handlooms.
