A parliamentary panel has suggested to the government conduct an impact assessment study of its urban housing scheme and explore the feasibility of extending the programs with changes to benefit the urban poor at a large scale to accomplish the objective of ‘Housing for all’.

The Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs also seek to know the number of slums de-notified since the implementation of the In-Situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR) vertical of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) and noticed that the housing ministry is duty-bound to maintain the data pertaining to the outcome of its mission and schemes.

The committee stated that out of the total 122.69 lakh houses sanctioned under the four verticals of PMAY-U and nearly 60 per cent of houses have been sanctioned under the beneficiary-led construction (BLC) vertical itself.

The report also mentioned that as the scheme is demand-driven, there are chances that some needy sections will not be able to fulfil the eligibility condition for the program and they could not avail of the benefit.

The report also observed that the majority of urban people are homeless and do not have land too.
