Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been banned from public office by Election Commission for five years due to charges of unlawfully selling state gifts which he received from heads of other nations on Friday, according to local media.

A case had been registered by the ruling government with the Election Commission of Pakistan in August seeking proof of the gifts that Khan had purchased at discounted rates from the state repository, also termed as Toshakhana.

The judgment ruled that Khan was involved in corrupt acts and thus, disqualified as the Member of Parliament.

Khan received expensive gifts from affluent Arab rulers during his tenure as PM in 2018. The gifts were deposited in Toshakhana.

Later, he purchased those gifts at a discounted price as per the country's laws and sold them at hefty prices. It was notified that he had earned around Rs 58 million after paying Rs 21.56 million for the gifts.
