PM Modi thanks BRICS nations in the opening address

PM Modi is chairing the BRICS Summit for the second time. He previously chaired the Goa Summit in 2016.

PM Modi on Thursday chaired the 13th annual summit of the BRICS nations. The event that is being organised virtually, saw the participation of the heads of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The theme of this year’s summit is ‘[email protected]: Intra-BRICS cooperation for continuity, consolidation and consensus.’

The meeting is taking place in the wake of the Taliban forming a government in Afghanistan. The leaders are expected to discuss the takeover and the terror threat from Afghanistan to the rest of the region.

PM Modi thanked all the member states for their cooperation in conducting the summit. He also said that BRICS is an ‘influential voice’ for the emerging economies of the world. He also mentioned that the Water Resources Ministers of the member countries will meet for the first time in November this year.

Apart from the head of the member states, the meeting is also being attended by the President of the New Development Bank Marco Troyjo, India’s NSA Ajit Doval, the pro tempore Chair of BRICS Women’s Business Alliance, Sangita Reddy and the pro tempore chair of the BRICS Business Council Onkar Kanwar.

BRICS completes 15 years this year. PM Modi is chairing the summit for the second time. He chaired the BRICS summit for the first time in 2016 in Goa.
