Green hydrogen manufacturing units of around 30.8 kilo-tonnes per annum (KTPA) are being set up by public sector undertakings in the oil and gas industry by 2030.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), these facilities are spread across six states: Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) is constructing a 10 KTPA facility in Madhya Pradesh, which is expected to be finished by 2030.
Similarly, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is constructing a 7 KTPA facility in Haryana (Panipat) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) is constructing a 7.3 KTPA green hydrogen production facility in Andhra Pradesh. Both manufacturing facilities are expected to be finished by FY26.
Numaligarh Refinery (NRL), located in Assam, plans to build a 5 KTPA facility in the state by 2030. Furthermore, Chennai Petroleum Corporation (CPCL) plans to build a 1 KTPA unit in Tamil Nadu by FY27, while Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) plans to build a 0.5 KTPA green hydrogen generating unit in Karnataka by 2025.
Research and Development
Aside from that, different R&D (Research and Development) activities on hydrogen are being carried out by Oil and Gas Public Sector Undertakings (OGPSUs). OGPSUs have also established a hydrogen corpus fund to support research and development on different aspects of hydrogen, including its production.
The government authorised the National Green Hydrogen Mission in January of this year, with a budget of Rs 19,744 crores and a goal of producing 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen with an associated renewable energy capacity of about 125 gigatonnes (GW) by 2030.
The targeted production capacity will result in total investments of over 8 lakh crores and the creation of over 6 lakhs of clean employment.
The Mission will fund experimental projects in other difficult-to-abate sectors, such as steel, long-distance heavy-duty mobility, shipping and energy storage, to replace fossil fuels and fossil fuel-based feedstocks with Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. It will also fund research and development initiatives and create a solid framework for regulations, standards and certification.
