According to the Times Higher Education (THE) 14th annual edition of world rankings 2018 of the top 1000 universities in over 77 countries, not a single Indian university has made it even in the top 200 band.

This year, even India’s representation also declined, from 31 institutes to only 30 while eight of its universities have slid down to lower rankings.

Premier Indian Institute like Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore that held the ranking in 201-250 band last year got dropped to 251-300 band this year. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Kanpur and Madras have slid down in the rankings to lower bands.

IIT Bombay found a place in the 351-400 band while IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee have been listed in the 501-600 band.

Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University, University of Delhi and Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati made it to the 601-800 band.

Meanwhile, two UK universities have fared very well on the Times Higher Education Rankings, with Oxford University holding on to the first position for the second year in a row and Cambridge university coming up to the second position overtaking the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University, both tied for the third position this year.

Even though universities in the United States continued to dominate the world rankings in the list, Chinese universities are constantly climbing the ladder.

Indian universities performed poorly with all except one dropping in the rankings, mainly because of other universities rising at a faster rate, a statement on the rankings said.
