On 21 April 2022, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said that the government has constituted an expert committee to investigate the several electric two-wheeler vehicles catching fire incidents in the past two months.

Based on the committee’s report, if any electric vehicle company is found negligent in their processes, a heavy penalty will be imposed and a recall of all defective vehicles will be ordered.

In one of his tweets, Gadkari also warned companies to take advance recall action of all defective batches of electric vehicles immediately.

In the last two months, we have witnessed several electric two-wheeler models from the brands like Ola Electric, Okinawa Autotech, Jitendra EV, and PureEV catching fire.

Last month, the government had ordered a probe after concerns about the safety of electric vehicles came to light. The Centre for Fire Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) was asked to probe the circumstances that led to the incidents.
