National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has started India's first green hydrogen blending in the piped natural gas (PNG) network of NTPC Kawas township, Surat with the joint effort of NTPC and Gujarat Gas (GGL).

The blending process will help to supply H2-NG (natural gas) to the consumers of Kawas township. Green hydrogen is prepared by electrolysis of water using power from an already installed 1 MW floating solar project.

The regulatory body, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved 5 per cent volume/volume blending of green hydrogen with PNG till the blending level reaches up to 20 per cent. This would also help to reduce CO2 emissions.

Also, this blending operation process will help India to become the centre stage of the global hydrogen economy. This would further help to reduce the hydrocarbon import bill and to bring forex ashore by becoming a green hydrogen and green chemicals exporter to the world.

Selected countries like the UK, Germany and Australia have been able to achieve the green hydrogen blending operation.
