India's monsoon rains were 26 per cent above normal in the week to Aug. 17, strengthening from a 14 per cent above normal reading in the previous week, the weather office said on Thursday.

India's June to September monsoon rains are crucial to crop production in 60 per cent of the country that does not have adequate irrigation.

Last year, rainfall was 6 per cent below normal in the week to Aug. 18, after a weak start in June, but it picked up during the four-month season and ended as normal.
