Modi Govt Extends Free Ration Scheme Until Dec 2022

Under this, each beneficiary will get an additional 5 kg free ration per person per month in addition to his normal quota of food grains under the NFSA

Amid the upcoming state assembly elections, the union government on Wednesday extended the free ration scheme for three more months. 

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur said that the time period of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY) is being extended till December 2022. 

Under PM-GKAY, about Rs 44,000 crore will be spent in the next three months, he said. 

The scheme was started during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Under this, each beneficiary will get an additional 5 kg free ration per person per month in addition to his normal quota of food grains under the NFSA. 

The scheme was scheduled to end on September 30, however, the centre took the step in view of the forthcoming festive season.
