Mizoram To Build Five Hydropower Plants With Total Capacity Of 800 MW

Mizoram government has produced Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for five hydroelectric power plants in the state with a total generation capacity of around 800 MW, according to Power and Electricity Department officials.

Officials told that DPRs for the Kolodyne-II HEP (460 MW), Tuival HEP (210 MW), Bairabi Dam Project (80 MW), Tuirini HEP (24 MW), and Tuivawl HEP (24MW) have already been produced. Four more planned hydroelectric projects are currently being investigated.

Mizoram currently has no significant power projects, and the state imports power from four regional power plants in Tripura, spending approximately Rs 400 crore per year on power purchases from outside sources.

The department officials and engineers informed Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati about the proposed power projects on Monday, and asked Commissioner-and-Secretary H Lalengmawia and other officials and engineers, referring to his recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to discuss the proposed power projects with the Union Power Ministry to fine-tune the DPRs and to inform the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

The Governor also urged the department to investigate the possibility of utilising the resources of the large PSUs to carry out some of the suggested projects.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of electricity generation from solar plants in the state.
