Nearly after two years, the suspension on former US President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts will be lifted by Meta, according to an official statement of the company on Wednesday.

The suspension had come into effect after the dangerous Capitol Hill riot on 6 January 2021.

The restoration of the account is likely to boost Trump’s run for the White House in 2024.

The American politician has around 34 million followers on Facebook and 23 million on Instagram, which are crucial for his political outreach and fundraising.

Reports suggest Meta’s decision has received mixed reviews; some have appreciated the company’s move supporting political outreach while majority of them have lambasted the company for lax moderating policies.

Meanwhile, Meta in its blog post stated, it has developed new guardrails to deter repeat offenses.

Meta’s President Nick Clegg stated, “If we found Mr. Trump violating the set norm his account will be liable for violation for around one month or two years depending on the severity of the violation.”

Meta’s decision didn’t go well with the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP, Free Press and other groups, who expressed concerns over Facebook's ability to prevent any future attacks on the democratic process, considering Trump’s previously repeated false claim surrounding the 2020 presidential election.
