The World Trade Centres Association and real estate developer Merlin Group have reached a deal to build a 3.5 million-square-foot World Trade Centre in Kolkata.

On Tuesday, Scott Wang, vice president of the World Trade Centres Association (WTCA), Asia Pacific area and Sushil Mohta, chairman, along with Saket Mohta, managing director of Merlin Group, Kolkata, signed the License Agreement for the project. The estimated expenditure in the under-construction project in Salt Lake, West Bengal, is around Rs 1,500 crore.

Scott Wang said that it would assist in attracting business with overseas countries as well as promote trade and business through 320 World Trade Centres distributed across nearly 100 countries worldwide.

According to Sushil Mohta, the proposed World Trade Centre would strengthen West Bengal's and Eastern India's economic prosperity by forging cooperation with international trade organisations and investors from other countries via other World Trade Centre members. He added that the proposed World Trade Center would contribute significantly to the state budget and generate 30,000 jobs.

Mumbai is home to India's first World Trade Centre. Centres can be found in Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi, Noida, Pune and other cities.
