The chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee on Thursday slammed the central government amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi's request to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel.

PM Modi on Wednesday said some states did not decrease value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel despite the excise duty cut by the union government last November.

The event turned political while speaking at an interaction with chief ministers on the emerging Covid-19 situation in India, Modi said he wanted to flag a separate issue of the challenges being faced by the people due to the global situation.

Criticising the opposition ruled states, Modi said that they have done "injustice" to the people by not transferring the benefits of the move to them.

Clapping back at PM Modi's remarks, Mamta Banerjee took to Twitter and wrote, "Instead of pointing fingers at states, GOI should reduce its  customs duty(@ 5 per cent), additional customs duty(@ 11 per cent) & excise duty (11 per cent) on ATF to bring down airfares."

She said that the government of West Bengal have exempted taxes on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) at Bagdogra and Andal airports and takes only 1 per cent on RCS udan flights at Kolkata. She said that government take 5 per cent on small aircraft and 12.5 per cent for all airlines commencing operations from 2012 to 2013.

"We have been proactive in slashing all our levies to bring down airfares, while GoI is preaching free sermons without practising them," Mamta tweeted.
