Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday took charge as the president of the Indian National Congress as the first non-Gandhi after a span of 24 years.

He defeated Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor with a huge margin for the post of presidential elections held last week.

Madhusudan Mistry, Chairman of the Congress Central Election Authority, handed over the election certificate to Kharge in the presence of former party chief Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka, and Rahul Gandhi

Ealier, Kharge met former PM Manmohan Singh at the Congress president's office and on the AICC headquarters lawns in the capital, according to news agency PTI.

His appointment as the party's president comes with major challenges as more than 11 states will go to polls before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
