Jeep Compass Coming To India: What We Know So Far

The Made-in-India Jeep Compass is being manufactured in 50 different trim, powertrain, transmission and colour combinations.

The wholly owned Indian subsidiary of Italian automaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is all set to launch its all-new 2017 Jeep Compass SUV in the country.

Jeep brand first entered the Indian market on 30 August 2016 and launched the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. Compass is going to be the brand’s fourth offering in India after Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee SRT, and Wrangler Unlimited.

Here is what we know, so far, about the new upcoming vehicle:

1. Compass is the first Jeep vehicle to be fully built in India. The company rolled out the Jeep Compass from its Ranjangaon manufacturing facility on 1 June, 2017.

2. The manufacturer had invested $ 280 million (over Rs 1,800 crore) in the Jeep Compass project.

3. The Jeep Compass is going to be launched in the third quarter of calendar year 2017 (July-September). It is likely to be priced between Rs 15 - 25 lakh, and is going to compete with the likes of Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson.

4. One of the important highlights of the Jeep Compass is that both its export as well as the India models will be identical in terms of build and quality. The company will export the vehicle to international right-hand drive markets from India.

5. The SUV will feature two powertrain options – the 160+ HP, 250 Nm Multi-air petrol and the 170+ HP, 350 Nm, Diesel. It will also come with options of the 6-speed manual transmission and the 7-speed Dual Dry Clutch Technology Automatic. Both these engines will be scalable to BS-VI regulatory requirements in India.

6. It will come with the brand’s four-wheel drive capability called as Jeep active drive, which is equipped with Selec terrain traction management system. The SUV will come with a driveline disconnect technology, which helps in fuel saving and assists safer driving.

7. This compact SUV will offer Electric Parking Brake (EPB) across the range. The EPB comes in four modes.

8. The Jeep Compass will have frequency selective damping, which provide variable damping that adjusts to road undulations.

9. With over 50+ safety and security features, the Jeep Compass will be equipped with electronic stability control, anti-lock braking system, dynamic steering torque, hill start assist, adaptive brake lights, panic brake assist and six airbags with dual stage passenger airbags.

10. Jeep Compass is the first vehicle in India to have laser welded doors, the company claims.

11. The SUV manufacturer has used over 65 percent high strength steel, in the making of the vehicle, for maximising vehicle dynamics and crash performance.
