Jagdeep Dhankar Elected As 14th Vice President Of India

Dhankar was serving as the governor of West Bengal until his nomination last month and was up against former Union minister and five-time Congress MP, Margaret Alva. Her candidature was backed by a majority of the Opposition parties

Jagdeep Dhankar, the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) Vice Presidential candidate on Saturday evening was declared as the 14th Vice President of India.

Dhankar was serving as the governor of West Bengal and was up against former Union minister and five-time Congress MP, Margaret Alva. Her candidature was backed by a majority of the Opposition parties.

The election for the post was held on Saturday between 10 am and 5 pm. A total of 725 MPs registered their vote, and 63 lawmakers skipped the polling exercise. Out of the votes cast, 710 were found to be valid and 15 were found to be invalid, the returning officer said.

"Dhankar secured 528 votes", the official said, which is higher than the minimum of 363 votes that were required for the victory.

He will be administered the oath to office on August 11, a day after the tenure of incumbent Vice President Venkaiah Naidu is scheduled to expire.
