J&K Administration Approves Rs 91 Cr For Revival Of Silk Industry

The project also aimed at giving employment to 7,000 new silkworm farmers and providing skill training to 15,000 farmers

The administration of Jammu and Kashmir has approved a project worth Rs 91 crore for the revitalisation of the silk industry in the Union Territory through technological advancement.

An official told a leading media house that the technological intervention will be efficiently implemented in each level of sill production. The official also claimed that technological intervention shall double the number of cocoons produced in J&K and will boost value addition. 

The silk industry in Jammu & Kashmir has been facing various challenges in recent years that will be needed modernisation and involvement of technology in order to deal with growing demand.

J&K is known for its high-quality bivoltine silk which is considered to be the silk-producing hub in the country. 

According to the official, the newly approved project includes planting 10 lakh mulberry plants in tree mode and doubling the silkworm seed production from 8 lakh to 6 lakh,  establishing 100 new chawki rearing centres for the supply of chawki worms to seri farmers, and increasing cocoon production up to 1350 MT.
