India Third Largest Source Of HTTP DDoS Attacks In Q2 2022: Report

In its latest report, Cloudflare revealed that India was the third largest source of HTTP DDoS attacks in Q2 2022. During the quarter the attacks from India grew by a massive 87 per cent.

“For the second quarter in a row, the United States tops the charts as the main source of HTTP DDoS attacks. Following the US is China in second place, and India and Germany in the third and fourth. Even though the US remained in the first place, attacks originating from the US shrank by 48 per cent QoQ while attacks from other regions grew; attacks from India grew by 87 per cent, from Germany by 33 per cent, and attacks from Brazil grew by 67 per cent”, the report said. 

Cloudflare said that it saw some of the largest attacks the world has ever seen including a 26 million request per second HTTPS DDoS attacks in Q2. Commenting on the attack, Cloudflare said, “This attack was unique for a variety of reasons, including that it originated from a very small but powerful botnet”.

Highlighting its observations on cyberattacks in Russia and Ukraine, the report said BFSI companies in Russia were the most targeted in Q2; almost 45 per cent of all application-layer DDoS attacks targeted this sector. 

Further, the report revealed that cryptocurrency companies in Russia were the second most attacked. Online media dropped to third place (from first in Q1). 

On the other hand, the report highlighted that Broadcast Media companies in the Ukraine were the most targeted in Q2 by DDoS attacks.

In June, 20 per cent of Cloudflare customers who experienced a DDoS attack reported receiving a ransom note – the peak seen in 2022 and a significant spike compared to 6 per cent in May and 12% in April. 

Some more statistics from the report:

• Attacks on the Aviation and Aerospace industry increased by 493 per cent QoQ. 
• Attacks lasting over three hours increased by 9 per cent.
• While most of the attacks are indeed short, Cloudflare saw an increase of over 15 per cent in attacks ranging between 20-60 minutes, and a 9 per cent increase of attacks lasting more than three hours. 
• Even short attacks can have lengthy repercussions, with IT personnel spending hours or even days restoring service.

Additionally, the report observed that attacks from China shrank by 78 per cent, and attacks from the US shrank by 43 per cent in Q2.
