The Indian government has set timeline for attaining non-fossil energy capacity of 500 GW by 2030 through the Panchamrit Declaration during COP26.

Union Minister of Coal Pralhad Joshi in a written reply in Rajya Sabha mentioned that India has also said it will meet 50 per cent of its energy requirement from renewable energy by 2030.

“In line with ‘Glasgow Climate Pact’, while India has committed to clean energy; the pace of transition to cleaner energy sources in India is to be viewed in the light of national circumstances, and principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, the transfer of climate finance and low cost climate technologies,” the Minister mentioned.

He also emphasised that coal is going to stay as a major source of energy in the foreseeable future because of being an affordable source of energy with substantial reserve. “Thus, as of now there is no scenario of transition away from coal affecting the workers involved in coal mining,” it said.
