Almost a year after securing a thumping majority in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2015 launched India’s own Smart Cities Mission, which is one of the most ambitious projects of the NDA government till date. The government has identified as many as 100 cities from different parts of the country to be transformed into smart cities. The creation of a smart city entails physical, institutional, social and economic infrastructure of cities, which would resultantly enhance the standard of living of people and attract investments. The idea behind developing smart cities is basically setting in motion a virtuous cycle of growth and development.

Smart cities offer solutions to our biggest urban challenges and address issues such as rising crime rates and traffic congestion. But how can a city be smart without being safe and secured? While there are several factors driving the smart city development, a major catalyst for the revolution has been the emergence of state-of-the-art security and surveillance tools and equipments such as 4K and ultra HD surveillance cameras. At the heart of the smart city initiative is ensuring robust security and safety for citizens, and advanced video surveillance solutions have a crucial role to play in this regard.

Thanks to consistent innovations, now we have the offer to choose from a wide range of CCTV cameras. The range varies from IP cameras to night-vision to colour night-vision cameras and adding the ‘smart’ factor is that these can be controlled through our mobile phones. In fact, the latest IP-enabled intelligent high-definition cameras with seamless integration and universal surveillance software programmes will have a greater role in enhancing urbanized living, which is at the core of the concept of smart cities.

Not just at the nuclear level, but these tools ensure adequate safety and trigger a sense of security even at the institutional levels. For instance, an integrated video surveillance mechanism can improve and expand the ambit of criminal investigation efficiency and traffic management.

Apart from the obvious advantage with regard to safety, smart surveillance products can also play a significant role in providing more advanced public services in smart cities. For example, a smart video surveillance mechanism has the potential to automatically transmit information about a traffic hazard to multiple systems that can instantaneously advise the authorities and drivers themselves to take alternate routes. According to a research, the Indian video surveillance market size is likely to top $2.4 billion by the end of this year or early next year. It is now up to the players in the domain to gear up to tap the enormous business opportunity.

One of the most significant advantages of equipping a smart city with smart security and surveillance products is early threat detection, which would eventually lead to quick remedial steps. The wide array of smart security and surveillance products, tools and equipments can leverage Artificial Intelligence, IoT Technology and geospatial positioning to make the smart cities smarter. With connected systems and big data, smart cities are undoubtedly the future of urban development. And last but not the least, the players and the security and surveillance domain have the prowess to enable authorities take better and informed decisions pertaining to infrastructure, city planning, fleet optimization, intelligent transportation, public safety & security and operational and environmental sustainability.
