Gold and silver jewellery has become expensive than before due to increase in hallmarking charges by Rs 10.

According to a notification by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), hallmarking charge has been increased on gold and silver jewellery, but no change has been made in the minimum consignment fee of both these jewellery. Hallmarking charges are levied on a per piece basis of the jewellery, irrespective of its weight or appearance. This means, no matter whatever is the weight of the jewel, the hallmarking charge will be fixed at Rs 45 for gold and Rs 35 for silver.

Hallmarking of gold jewelery has been made mandatory from June 1, 2022. The provision has been implemented to sell the jewelery of any purity, only after hallmarking it. Hence, no jeweler can sell jewelery without a hallmark. However, the government has not yet made hallmarking of silver jewelry mandatory. If a customer wants to buy hallmarked silver jewelry, he can request the same from the jeweler. After this the jeweler will sell the jewelery by taking hallmarking charges.
