The Indian government is constructing “permanent vertical bunkers” to house BSF troops in the strategic location of Sir Creek and the ‘Harami Nala’ marshy area near the India-Pakistan International Border in Gujarat, according to official sources.

The Union Home Ministry has approved a Rs 50 crore fund for the construction of the eight multi-story bunkers and observation posts, citing the “constant infiltration of Pakistani fishermen and fishing boats in the area,” according to sources with the India-based news agency PTI.

According to official information, 22 Pakistani fishermen were apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) in Gujarat in 2022, along with 79 fishing boats and heroin worth Rs 250 crore and charas worth Rs 2.49 crore.

According to sources, three pylon-shaped towers are being built in the Sir Creek area. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) will build five such structures in a 4,050 sq km marshy area between the two countries the 900 sq km ‘Harami Nala’ area.

According to officials, space will be provided on the top floor of each 42-foot-high vertical bunker for surveillance devices and radars to monitor the area, which includes serpentine estuaries. According to them, the bunkers’ remaining two floors will be able to house 15 armed BSF personnel as well as their logistics.

The bunkers are being built in the Lakhpat Wari bet, Dafa bet and Samudra bet, which are located on the eastern side of the creek and are within Indian territory.

According to a senior BSF officer, a BSF contingent is providing armed protection to labourers building three bunkers under the CPWD in the Sir Creek area and hopes to finish by March. He added that the ocean is expected to become turbulent in April, so the work is proceeding on a war footing.

The bunker was built after BSF director general (DG) Pankaj Kumar Singh gave a presentation on how the creek area is prone to infiltration and that the BSF security apparatus is located far behind during a tour to the Gujarat border with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in April last year.
