Former Bharat Petroleum Chief Arun Kumar Singh on Wednesday was appointed as the chairman and managing director of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

The appointment was made by the Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC) of the Government of India.

He will head the oil and gas production major for three years from the date of assumption of charge.

Singh served as the director (marketing) of state-owned refiner Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) from October 2018 to September 2021. He was then elevated to chairman and managing director of the company and retired in October 2022.

In his 38 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Singh has headed business units and entities in BPCL, such as retail, LPG, pipelines, and supply chain optimisation.

He also held the position of President (Africa and Australasia) in Bharat Petro Resources, a wholly owned subsidiary of BPCL, engaged in overseas oil and gas exploration.

ONGC has been without a regular chairman and managing director since April 2021 and the senior most director on the board has been entrusted with the additional charge. Since then, the firm has seen a record three interim heads.

This is the first ever instance of a retired person being appointed as a chairman of a Maharatna company.
